The Africa Coordinating Centre for Abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation (A.C.C.A.F) was officially launched on December 10, 2013 at the College of Health Sciences.

ACCAF formally established in 2012 was formed to champion current efforts and address the gaps in abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the Africa region. The overall aim of the Centre is to strengthen capacity in the region for research, implement interventions and monitor progress in accelerating efforts towards the abandonment of FGM and improved care for women and children suffering from negative consequences of the practice.

“The Research Office has the mandate to disseminate research and to show its impact to the society” – Prof. Irungu, DVC(RPE).

These are the words spoken by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Production and Extension) Professor Lucy W. Irungu who was  chief guest at the Nairobi branch ploughing contest that took place on Saturday October  26, 2013 at the University of Nairobi (UoN) Veterinary Farm, Kanyariri, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences  (CAVS), Upper Kabete Campus.

“Mental health is treatable…”, was the message passed to the audience by Professor Ndetei during an oral public defense of his Doctor of Science entitled “Studies and Works in Mental Health to inform Practice and Policy in the African Social Cultural Context”.

The Professor in Psychiatry took the audience through his research focus areas, highlighting milestones made since 1979, when his journey in mental health research began. Interestingly, his audience learnt that his passion for mental health has seen great reforms in mental health care facilities, translating to reduced number of patients in the facilities.

Professor David Musyimi Ndetei, MBchB (UON), DPM(London), MRcPsy, FRcPsy (UK), M.D (UON), Certificate in Psychotherapy (London), is set to make a public presentation of his Doctor of Science Thesis titled, “Studies and Works in Mental Health to Inform Practice and Policy in the African Social Cultural Context”.

As a researcher, Professor Ndetei  is dedicated to research and evidence based policy, practice and promotion of mental and neurological health, and healthy behavior. 

Professor Ndetei has  published widely in renown peer reviewed journals in psychiatry such as the British Journal of Psychiatry, British Medical Journal, among others.
