The Vice Chancellor University of Nairobi received a team from ARUA-CD who paid him a courtesy call on the morning of October 2nd 2018. The team was from the University of Cape Town, University of Ghana, Legon and the Institute of Climate Change and Adaptation (ICCA) of the University of Nairobi. UoN is member of ARUA and ICCA was submitted as a hub by the University.

The delegation was led by UCT’s Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mark George New. The Deputy Vice Chancellor RPE Prof. Madara Ogot welcomed the team on behalf of the Vice Chancellor and stated that the University strongly supports ARUA network activities such as the implementation of the ARUA Climate and Development Centre of Excellence

Prof. Ogot stated that that the University encouraged our researchers to more research within the continent, especially under ARUA. He is cognizant of the fact that it is easier to fund-raise under the umbrella of ARUA than as individual Universities in Africa.

Prof. New elucidated the purpose of their visit as to explore the areas of mutual interest with the University of Nairobi researchers. He reverberated the need of umbrella organizations for ease of fund raising for research. He went further to state that ARUA had identified three (3) Centres of Excellence in the Sub-Saharan-Region. These hubs were in University of Ghana, University of Cape Town and at the University of Nairobi.

ARUA Climate and Development Centre of excellence has three research foci which are 1. Enhancing knowledge systems for climate resilience where ICCA from UoN is the lead for East Africa, 2. Sustainable energy for poverty reduction where University of Cape Town is the lead for South Africa, and 3. Next generation researchers and practitioners where University of Ghana is the lead for West Africa.

In closing, Prof. Adunda, Principal College of Biological and physical sciences said that even if ICCA was the youngest institute in the college, it had grown to have the highest numbers of Masters and PHD students in the College. The support given to the Institute would continue.
