You do not write proposals to get money, you write proposals to further an idea or to solve a problem for which you need money – Prof. Madara Ogot, Director, Research and Extension

The second session of the Grant Proposal Writing workshop kicked off yesterday with the Director for Research and Extension, Professor Madara Ogot challenging the participants to apply for the 2nd National Research Fund (NRF) Call for multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional grants.

Having written and won numerous grants, Prof. Ogot  who is also the workshop facilitator, challenged the participants to develop proposals that further an idea or solve a problem then cost what would be required to develop the good idea. In this regard, the proposals should be important and relevant. In addition, the proposal should appeal to a particular audience, who is the funder.

To appeal to the funder, learn to follow the funders instructions and read the fine print carefully. Also, it is important for researchers to be part of research team, maintain a notebook (electronic or manual) where you can write ideas, study consistently and continuously review literature in your area.

Have a research plan, which is a road map that defines what you want to achieve “, Prof. Ogot told the participants. “With a research plan, you will be able to define resources required for your project;  outline activities to be carried out; show what the project needs to bring out in terms of outputs; define what you the aim  achieve which is the purpose of the project and  help you analyse your goals in terms of the project impact and significance”, he added.

The Grant Proposal Writing Workshop is one of the capacity building initiatives by the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research Production and Extension). The training is conducted annually but dependent on available resources.
