Leaders in Innovation Fellowship (LIF) Programme is a collaborative programme between the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KENIA), the National Research Fund (NRF) – Kenya, and the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAENG)-UK. The programme is implemented under the umbrella of Kenya-UK Newton Utafiti Fund Programme.

The purpose of the programme is to nurture Kenyan technological innovators and support commercialization of innovations. The programme is a platform for developing capacity in entrepreneurship and commercialization of research outputs including intellectual property right issues.

KENIA is therefore inviting researchers with technological innovations and have developed or are in the process of developing business proposition for their innovations to apply for the Leaders in Innovation fellowship Programme – 2017.

To apply for the Programme, innovators need to meet the following selection criteria.

  1. Be a Kenyan citizen with a valid Passport;
  2. Have a technological innovation based on research in engineering, encompassing a wide range of fields including: agricultural technology, biotechnology, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, ICT, materials science, mechanical engineering, and medical engineering.
  3. Be attached to an institution - either a research institution, a university or an innovation hub (public or private);
  4. Potential for commercialization of the innovation, in terms of feasible business concept and target market;
  5. Innovation with expected benefit(s) to Kenya’s socio-economic development.
  6. The primary application of the innovation must NOT be in the defence or military sector.

Selected candidates will be invited to attend a two-weeks residential training Programme in the UK in February 2018. After the training programme, the successful innovators with the most viable business plans will be granted a commercialization grant in line with their business plan but up to a maximum limit approved per innovator.
