Did you know that Veterinarians report that an average of 2.5 plastic bags as well as other plastic waste are found inside the stomachs of cows in abattoirs in Western Kenya?

August 28, 2017 marks the enactment of the new law banning the use, manufacture and importation of plastic bags for commercial and domestic use in Kenya.

As this law comes into effect, many may feel they are still in the woods, trying to comprehend the extent of the ban on use of the plastic bags, exemptions if any, alternatives and the implications. Prof. Nzioka Muthama, Deputy Director, Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies and who is also the Acting Chairman, University of Nairobi (UoN) Environmental Sustainability committee has unpacked the plastic ban in Kenya in this write-up
