The University of Nairobi (UoN) Science and Technology Park (STP), at present operates from a rapid-prototyping laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Building, Main Campus, which forms the core of the Technology Business Incubator (TBI). This rapid-prototyping facility, called a Fab Lab (fabrication or “fabulous” lab), is part of the international MIT Fab Lab network, which now boasts over 100 labs worldwide. The Fab Lab is ideal for innovative activity in a wide range of technical fields.

The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Production & Extension) in collaboration with Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO) recently conducted two days sensitization training on Intellectual Property Policy.
The training which targeted UMB, Deans, Directors, Coordinators and other stakeholders was intended to enlighten UoN management on the role and importance of Intellectual Property (IP) and the need to support those engaged in the creation of IP. In addition, it was a platform to train College IP Champions who in turn would carry on IP awareness campaigns to faculty and individual researchers.

GE Distributed Power (DP) University Challenge Award held at the University of Nairobi on 21st June 2013. The occasion was attended by Mr. John Rice, Vice-Chairman GE, President and CEO of GE Global Growth and Operations; Prof. L.W. Irungu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Production & Extension) representing the Vice-Chancellor, UoN; Dean, School of Engineering , UoN; representatives from participating universities and students.
Denis Malowa, Kennedy Makau, Vincent Mumo and Justus Kavita students from University of Nairobi, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Environmental and Biosystems Engineering departments respectively for clinching 1st runner-up position in the GE Distributed Power (DP) University Challenge Award. Project entitled "Stima Mtaani' translated "Electricity in the hood'" uses cost cutting measures such as use of recycled plastic and bamboo for blade design and revamped car alternators.

The key objective of the Mentoring Orientation Workshop is to clarify the expectations and roles of AWARD Fellows and their mentors, and to facilitate the establishment of solid working relationships. The workshop is specifically designed to provide knowledge and skills in formal mentoring, as a way of enhancing the career progression of AWARD Fellows.
The mentoring orientation workshops for 2013 AWARD fellowships were held in Uganda.

The Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES) held a very successful and interactive half-day seminar on 1st August 2013 entitled; Delivering Technologies to Communities and Counties through University/Research /Extension Partnership Model.
The Seminar which took place at the Pride Inn hotel, Westlands, Nairobi was aimed at bringing together key partners of University of Nairobi’s (UoN) Dryland Centre to focus on how outcomes of research, extension services and technological innovations can reach a broad audience within the drylands. The specific objectives of the Seminar were:
- To share the experiences from University/Research Institutes/National Government Extension Delivery Models in Kenya
- To learn from the US Land Grant University led Extension Model- example of Colorado State University
- To explore opportunities for University/Research/ Extension partnerships for Engagement with Communities and County Governments.

The University of Nairobi and Pyrethrum and Other Industrial Crops Directorate (P&OICD) officially commenced their partnership on pyrethrum.
The partnership which has brought together scientists from diverse backgrounds aims to expand pyrethrum through science and technology.
Kenya has been the leading producer of pyrethrum in the world accounting for over 70% of the pyrethrum traded on the world market since World War II. The sector however, has in the recent past been faced with many challenges leading to very low yields due to among others, low investment in research.

The system will enable the Board of Postgraduate Studies (BPS) maintain an accurate and easily retrievable record of the progress of each postgraduate student and keep track of the students’ contact with their supervisors through easily retrievable records of submitted progress reports. In addition, the Board will be able to track and accurately determine the expiry date of the registration period for each postgraduate student, accurately compute and determine the fees to be charged for extension of registration, track and flag in the system those who have graduated or exited from the University and provide management with reports to aid in continuous process improvement.

The REACH progamme is a seven-year global programme funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and led by Oxford University. The programme seeks to improve water security for millions of poor people in Asisa and Africa. The main activities are focused in eight Water Security Observations across three countries: Bangoladesh, Ethiopia and Kenya
